The lacrimal apparatus in a horse is responsible for producing and draining tears, which keep the eyes lubricated, protected from dust and debris, and free of infection. It consists of two main parts:
- The lacrimal gland
- is an almond-shaped structure
- located dorsal to the lateral canthus of the eye.
- they secrete the serous fluid which moistures and lubricates the conjunctiva of the lid and eye ball.
the gland leads to excretory ducts.
at the medial angle, lacrimal caranculi drain into the superior and inferior canaliculi.
canaliculi join forming lacrimal sac.
Lacrimal sac: This small sac is located near the inner canthus (corner) of the eye and acts as a reservoir for tears.
lacrimal sac continues as the lacrimal duct extends and opens in the nasal cavity.
