Oxytetracycline in Horses: Benefits and Risks

 Benefits:

  • Broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against many types of bacteria.
  • Used to treat respiratory infections, digestive tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.
  • Available in various forms such as injection, intramuscular injection, and syrup.

Risks:

  • May cause digestive problems such as colitis and colic.
  • May cause increased heart rate and irregularity.
  • May interact with calcium, affecting muscle function, including the heart muscle and intestines.
  • Very Important: The use of tetracycline compounds, including oxytetracycline, is not recommended in pregnant mares.
    • Reason: The medication passes through the placenta and reaches the foal, potentially causing delayed bone growth and tooth staining.
